rtx-backend-metal: fix swap_dims returning a corrupt strided view
swap_dims copied the buffer but wrote elements back at their ORIGINAL positions (new_idx was computed with the swapped strides), returning a stride-swapped non-contiguous tensor. Every other op in this backend — elementwise kernels, MPS matmul, to_vec — reads raw buffers and ignores strides, so any transpose consumer (notably the autograd matmul backward, grad_a = grad_c @ b^T) silently computed on untransposed data. Found via CPU-vs-Metal gradient parity on the DigiGraph HetGAT: forward matched, gradients were ~2x off. swap_dims now physically permutes into a contiguous result (reading through the input's strides + offset), and reshape asserts contiguity instead of silently reinterpreting a non-contiguous buffer. 3 new parity tests incl. matmul-after-transpose (25 total pass on-device). rtx-backend-metal: GPU index_select / index_add via one-hot CSR SpMM
Override the Backend trait's host-round-trip defaults: gather is S @ X with S the [E x N] one-hot selection CSR; scatter-add is the adjoint S^T @ X, whose CSR is built directly by counting sort so duplicate indices land in one row and the spmm kernel (one thread per output element) accumulates them without atomics. CSR matrices are cached per thread keyed by the exact index list + dims, so a static graph topology (GNN message passing) builds each matrix once. Host fallback on degenerate shapes or any sparse-pipeline failure. 13 new parity tests vs CPU reference: duplicates, unreferenced rows, D=1/2/3, 15k x 5k x 64 gather/scatter, cache reuse, adjoint roundtrip. Verified on-device that the SpMM path (not the fallback) serves all 13. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <[email protected]> |

rtx-backend: gate CUDA parity tests to x86_64 Linux
The rtx-backend-cuda dev-dependency is already gated to cfg(all(linux, x86_64)) in Cargo.toml, but the test file imported it unconditionally, so cargo test -p rtx-backend failed to compile on macOS. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <[email protected]> |

rtx-backend-metal: align to current rtx-metal API
rtx-metal dropped tensor_ops::{sin,cos,pow,clamp,gt_scalar,var} and never
had nn::{max_pool2d,avg_pool2d}; nn::conv2d grew a scalar 14-arg signature.
Give the missing ops correct host fallbacks (the sum_dim pattern), and
dispatch conv2d to the Metal kernel when its restricted signature applies
(symmetric stride/padding, dilation 1, groups 1), host fallback otherwise.
cargo test -p rtx-backend-metal: 22/22 parity tests pass on-device (M5).

MambaBlock::forward already had a working, tested CUDA dispatch (forward_cuda: cuBLAS matmuls for projections, CPU for the scan). backward() had none — it silently ran entirely CPU-serial on GPU tensors via to_vec()/from_vec() D2H/H2D round-trips. This adds the missing acceleration, mirroring forward_cuda's hybrid split: the four large projection-parameter gradients (in_proj, x_proj, dt_proj, out_proj) now go through batched GPU matmuls; the inherently sequential scan reverse-pass and small per-channel grads stay CPU. Extracted CpuWeights::pull and recompute_forward_cpu out of the old inline per-batch forward-recompute block inside backward() (pure refactor, gradient-checked unchanged by real_selective_scan.rs's existing 6 tests) so CPU backward and the new CUDA backward share identical forward math and can never numerically diverge on it. New CUDA-vs-CPU gradient-check test (mamba_cuda_backward_matches_cpu, #[ignore]-gated, GPU-only) caught a real bug during development: Tensor::contiguous() is a no-op stub in this rtx-tensor version, and cuda_matmul reads raw GPU storage by shape.dims() ignoring strides/offset, so .transpose(..).matmul(..) on a GPU tensor silently computed garbage (80-200x relative error on 3 of 4 accelerated gradients). Fixed by building already-transposed [dim, b*l] buffers on CPU before upload instead of transposing GPU-side. All 9 gradients now match CPU backward within ~2.2e-5 max relative error (tolerance 1e-4). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <[email protected]> |

The new lifecycle tests caught that the batch-optimizer worker crashed at spawn: DynamicBatchingConfig derived Default (all zeros), and tokio's interval() panics on a zero period. Default is now a usable config (batch 32 in [1,128], step 4, 1ms latency target, 100-sample window, 1s optimization interval, AIMD adaptation). New regression tests in AdaptiveProcessor, EdgeComputingManager, and MonitoringSystem assert that all workers are still alive shortly after start() (catches workers dying at startup) and that stop() completes via the graceful control-channel path, not the 5s abort backstop (catches shutdown hangs). cargo test -p rtx-streaming: 58 lib + 8 integration + 6 aux, all green. - token_generator: backend is now an optional real rtx-inference engine
(RwLock<Option<Arc<InferenceEngine>>>) with ServingTokenizer support;
set_backend/set_tokenizer plumbing through StreamingServer
- connection_manager: ConnectionPool::acquire no longer errors when the
idle cache is full — creates fresh connections up to max_connections
- streaming_server: ServerState::Running on construction; stream_inference
generates one token per step (chunk_size semantics)
- lifecycle bugs surfaced by the newly-compiling integration tests:
* start(): broadcast control-channel send with zero subscribers was
treated as fatal ("channel closed") in RealtimePipeline,
EdgeComputingManager, MonitoringSystem — now tolerated
* stop(): AdaptiveProcessor/EdgeComputingManager/MonitoringSystem
awaited worker interval loops that never exit (test hung 5h) —
workers are now aborted with cancellation-aware join
- integration_tests: removed stale .await on now-synchronous methods
cargo test -p rtx-streaming: 55 lib + 8 integration + 6 aux, all passing.

- orchestrator_core: execute_classical is genuine seeded QKV self-attention; execute_flash_attention delegates to rtx_flash_attention::flash_attention_forward (8-head reshape, clear Err on indivisible hidden); execute_hybrid composes the two; execute_edge/execute_distributed return explicit "modality not implemented" errors instead of fake success — which makes the previously-dead fallback_modalities retry loop real. - tensor_core_kernels: AttentionComputationOptimizer::execute dispatches Standard/Online to scaled_dot_product_attention, Flash to rtx-flash-attention, Approximated to an explicit Err (no approximation kernel exists; refuses to compute exact attention under an approximated label). - 10 new always-on tests incl. flash-vs-standard 1e-3 agreement and an Edge->Distributed->Classical fallback end-to-end. - docs/consolidation.md updated: both entries moved from scaffolding/no-op-stub status to real dispatch descriptions. 982 rtx-transformers lib tests pass. GpuViTEncoder gains upload_weights (extracted from construction), cpu_weights_mut, and reupload_weights; JepaTrainerV2 exposes context_encoder_as_any_mut for backend-specific downcasts. The runner resume path now restores checkpoint fields into the GPU encoder's host copy and pushes them back to the device buffers — previously GPU resume restored only the step counter with a warning. If re-upload fails after host restore, the run aborts rather than training on stale device weights. Verified live on the RTX 5060 Ti: train 20 steps -> resume from the .jepa binary with total_steps=30 -> "Resumed from step 20", exactly 10 further steps, eval runs, no warnings. New tests: GPU output changes after host mutation + re-upload; CPU-target re-upload is a no-op Ok. 972 CPU tests / 37 GPU jepa_gpu tests pass. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <[email protected]> |

- Eval: run_jepa_training now runs k-NN (k=5) + linear-probe evaluation every eval_every steps and at the end (deduped when aligned); JepaEvalResult recorded in JepaTrainingSummary (final_knn_acc / final_probe_acc), printed by the CLI, appended as an # eval section to the metrics CSV. Probe set is deterministic LCG synthetic (offset seed, never aliases training batches) or real shard labels when loaded. - NCCL: real GPU-direct AllReduce backend behind the new `nccl` feature (cudarc/nccl, dlopen-based so builds don't need libnccl). NCCL unique id is bootstrapped over the existing TCP rendezvous (master_port+137); data path is htod -> ncclAllReduce(Sum) -> dtoh -> mean. catch_unwind guards cudarc's panic-on-missing-lib so training falls back instead of aborting. Verified for real on the RTX 5060 Ti: single-rank GPU all_reduce identity test passes (26/26 with --features nccl). - GPU checkpointing/eval: JepaTrainerV2::context_encoder_cpu_weights() exposes host-side weights for both CPU and GPU encoders (GpuViTEncoder::cpu_weights); checkpoint save and eval now work for GPU training runs (verified: .jepa binaries written and 2 eval passes during a live GPU CLI run). Resume with a GPU encoder restores the step counter and warns that weight re-upload is not yet implemented rather than silently training on stale weights. 125 runner/distributed/vit tests pass; CLI 8/8; cuda check clean. - jepa_gpu: remove the bring-up 2-block cap; full-depth GPU-resident ViT verified against a full-depth CPU reference on the RTX 5060 Ti (depth-12 ViT-Tiny max_rel_err <= 6.6e-5). CpuViTEncoder's own hidden min(depth,2) cap removed too — CPU-path callers now get the model they configured. - jepa_distributed: real TCP parameter-server AllReduce backend (rendezvous handshake with world-size/rank validation, length- prefixed f32 payloads, connect/read/accept timeouts, connect retry until deadline so early peers survive rank 0 still computing); jepa_runner wires it for world_size > 1 and fails hard on collective errors. Two-rank loopback training run covered by test. - rtx-jepa-cli (new crate): rtx-jepa binary with train/bench/plan/ validate subcommands driving JepaRunConfig, run_jepa_training, run_jepa_benchmark, and ClusterTrainingPlan (plan --emit-config round-trips through a config serializer). GPU bench on this node: 86k patches/sec vs 1.3k CPU (~64x). - ViTSizeStr::Micro (d=32, depth=2) added as an explicit test/smoke size now that no hidden caps keep full-size configs cheap; heavy tests moved onto it (rtx-transformers suite: 367s -> 5s, and the runner subset had ballooned to 35min at full depth before this). 966 lib tests pass; 35/35 jepa_gpu with cuda; 8/8 CLI tests. Call-site rewrite pass audited every flagged site; none needed consolidation: metal_moe is an API-consistent backend specialization, modular/router.rs is module-level (not expert-token) routing, glam.rs is disabled dead code with a pre-existing bug (noted for whoever re-enables it), and the three flash-attention "reimplementations" turn out to be planner scaffolding, no-op stubs, and a doc comment — no attention math exists to delegate. jepa_gpu's attention is documented as part of the fused GPU ViT block by design. Verified no regressions: rtx-transformers 961 lib tests pass, jepa_gpu 34/34 with cuda, rtx-training cuda check clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <[email protected]> |

jepa_gpu.rs rewrite: all GEMMs (QKV, attention scores via a single cuBLAS call with folded 1/sqrt(dk) scale, weighted sum, projections, FFN) plus layernorm/GELU/bias/residual kernels now operate on device-resident CudaSlice buffers; new nvrtc kernels for numerically stable row softmax and head extract/scatter replace the CPU reorder loops. Two host transfers remain per encode(): patch-token upload and final output download. Fallback is now genuine-unavailability only (no device / feature off / kernel compile failure); per-op errors in live GPU mode are hard errors instead of silent per-op CPU downgrades. Parity vs CpuViTEncoder verified on RTX 5060 Ti / CUDA 13.1: max_rel_err <= 3.1e-5 across tiny/Tiny-192 configs (tolerance 1e-3). 34/34 jepa_gpu tests pass with --features cuda; 33/33 CPU-only. CLAUDE.md JEPA "Next" list updated to reflect completed GPU wiring, WebDataset reading, and cluster-plan consumption. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <[email protected]> |

Demos: - rtx-distllm-demo: real rtx-tensor weights per shard, real scaled-dot-product attention forward, metrics measured (Instant) instead of hardcoded constants; network topology remains a documented simulation fed by real tensor byte sizes. - rtx-model-zoo: MockInferenceEngine deleted; RealInferenceEngine loads a tiny real transformer into rtx_inference::InferenceEngine and runs genuine engine.infer per request; domain outputs are explicitly- labeled toy proxies derived from real output tokens. - rtx-inference-profiler: mock models deleted; profiles real matmul/softmax pipelines on rtx-tensor with measured latency/memory. Inference-path bugs the demos surfaced (fixed here): - ForwardPass::apply_embedding misused Tensor::gather for the embedding lookup — gather returns the indices' shape, silently dropping the hidden dim and breaking every downstream broadcast. Now uses the existing Tensor::embedding_lookup ([vocab,hidden] x [batch,seq] -> [batch,seq,hidden]). - Attention weight lookup accepts both self_attn. (HF-LLaMA) and attention. prefixes; final layer norm accepts norm.weight / model.norm.weight / ln_f.weight aliases. - Integration fixture gains the final norm weight; the previously always-failing engine tests now pass (8/8 model_loading_test). End-to-end inference through the real engine now works for the first time — verified via model_zoo_demo producing real forward-pass outputs across all categories. EAGLE (rtx-inference/src/eagle.rs, ~610 lines, mirrors medusa.rs conventions): EagleDraftHead autoregressive FFN with Concat/Add/ Attention feature fusion, EagleHeads draft model with draft/ draft_steps (per-step top-k for candidate trees) and teacher-forced training_loss; implements the speculative::EagleDraftModel trait so it plugs into the orchestration layer. 38 unit tests. Tokenizer (rtx-inference/src/tokenizer.rs): ServingTokenizer enum — Vocab (HuggingFace tokenizers, loadable from tokenizer.json) or ByteLevel fallback preserving previous behavior. rtx-serving-api's AppState and rtx-streaming's token generator now encode/decode through it (with_engine_and_tokenizer / set_tokenizer added; existing signatures unchanged). Also fixes two pre-existing compile errors in rtx-streaming (missing import, stray .await) that blocked its lib tests entirely. Tests: rtx-inference 328 pass, rtx-serving-api 193 pass, rtx-streaming 53 pass (2 pre-existing mock-server connection failures unrelated to these changes). - rtx-onnx-codegen: re-export AttributeValue from ir (private-module import broke the whole crate; remaining errors were knock-ons). - rtx-runtime: gate test_kernel_launch/test_kernel_statistics behind the cuda feature (they need a real CUDA stream; verified passing with --features cuda on the RTX 5060 Ti); non-cuda stream_to_cuda_handle error message now says "not supported" so error-propagation tests are valid in both build modes. - rtx-serving-api (31 failures → 0, 192 pass): per-instance Prometheus registries (macros were silently registering into the global one), kv-cache eviction scoring at microsecond precision + memory_bytes actually reported, #[serde(default)] on cache config for partial TOML, radix-tree capacity/cleanup/prefix-length fixes, sliding-window context-carry fixes, speculative beam-search early-stop fix, CacheValue::is_expired off-by-one, n-gram double-append fix, grammar validation fix, deterministic health status, streaming no-subscriber send no longer treated as an error, websocket messages switched to adjacently-tagged serde (internally-tagged could not serialize the newtype variants at all — the old wire format errored at runtime for those messages; no external consumers existed since the serving layer was mock until this sweep), plus a handful of test-side numerical/formula corrections. Deletions (all verified unreferenced by any mod/include/path declaration;
git history preserves them):
- rtx-transformers: entire orphaned curriculum/ split (mod.rs holds the
real inline implementation), non-_simple graph variants, superseded
simmim/jepa_integration files, layers/{sliding_window_attention,
positional_encoding,ssm_state_cache_original}, lib_full/lib_minimal/
error_full/error_minimal, orphaned MoE impls (moe_layer,
moe_integration).
- rtx-distributed/parallel_old.rs; rtx-flash-attention/{core_full,
lib_full}.rs; rtx-compress legacy_distillation + structured_pruner.
- rtx-tensor/tensor_core.rs; rtx-runtime/{cuda_kernel_ops,
cuda_backend_mock}.rs; rtx-memory/{gpu_pool_manager,allocator,
pool_type}.rs; rtx-losses/{lib_minimal,lib_full}.rs.
Docs honesty:
- rtx-backend-sycl marked EXPERIMENTAL SKELETON in crate docs and
CLAUDE.md backend table (all ops return NotImplemented).
- docs/consolidation.md records canonical MoE (layers/mixture_of_experts)
and flash-attention (rtx-flash-attention crate) implementations plus
remaining duplicates to consolidate.
- CLAUDE.md: meta-crate GPU features noted; simulation-only demos named;
serving/streaming mock removal noted.
Verified: cargo check --workspace clean (rtx-onnx-codegen pre-broken at
HEAD, unrelated); lib tests pass for all touched crates (rtx-runtime's 4
failures pre-exist at HEAD).

feat(meta,jepa): expose GPU features through meta-crates; wire JEPA cluster plan and real shard loading
Meta-crates (Phase 2): - rtx-core / rtx-training / rtx-inference-stack gain cuda and metal features threading into their sub-crates; GPU was previously unreachable through the user-facing bundles. - rtx-training restores rtx-distributed (the hpc-channels blocker is gone) so the advertised DistributedTransformerTrainer resolves; drops the unused rtx-runtime dep. - rtx-transformers drops unused rtx-backend/rtx-backend-cpu deps (stale comment referenced a teacher that never used them). Never-compiled CUDA paths fixed (surfaced by the new feature wiring, verified on RTX 5060 Ti / CUDA 13.1): - rtx-compress build.rs: missing Path/Command/fs imports. - rtx-flash-attention flash_decode_forward: reborrow &mut kernel args. - rtx-transformers: rope kernel include path, cudarc 0.18 Arc<CudaModule>, PushKernelArg imports in jepa_gpu, edition-2024 ref patterns. - rtx-memory: full cudarc 0.18 port (CudaContext, stream-based alloc, DevicePtr accessors, error enum formatting) across gpu_pinning, gpu_transfer, gpu_real, gpu_allocator/arena, gpu_tests. JEPA (Phase 3): - JepaRunConfig::apply_cluster_plan consumes ClusterTrainingPlan (batch size, TP/DP, world size, total steps) so jepa_cluster is no longer standalone dead config; ViTSizeStr::approx_params_m feeds JepaParallelConfig::for_model_and_cluster. - WebDatasetShard::load reads real .tar shards from disk via the existing parser (gzip rejected explicitly); to_in_memory documented as synthetic/test-only. - New image-decode feature actually defines the dep for the previously unreachable cfg(feature = "image-decode") JPEG/PNG decode path. fix(production): wire real inference path through engine, serving, and streaming
- rtx-inference: sample_next_token now copies the actual logits from the forward pass (Tensor::to_vec, last-token slice) instead of sampling from a fabricated all-zero vector; request metrics report measured queue/processing times instead of hardcoded constants. - rtx-serving-api: depends on rtx-inference; /v1/completions dispatches to a shared InferenceEngine (byte-level tokenization until a real tokenizer is threaded through) and returns 503 when no engine is loaded instead of mock text. ServingServer::with_engine attaches one. - rtx-streaming: depends on rtx-inference; generate_tokens delegates to an attached backend engine and errors without one instead of emitting "token_N" placeholders; tokenization is byte-level, not position-mod. - speculative decoding: document the orchestration (speculative/) vs implementation (medusa.rs/lookahead.rs) layering; CLAUDE.md no longer claims a standalone rtx-speculative-decoding crate. candle-kernels 0.9.2/0.8.4's compatibility.cuh has a buggy CUDA-version guard ((MAJOR<12 || MINOR<2) && ARCH<750) that misfires on CUDA 13.1, redefining __hmax_nan/__hmin_nan/atomicAdd that 13.1 already provides natively. Fixed upstream in candle-kernels 0.11.0 (pure ARCH<800 gate), so bump the workspace-wide candle pin to pull it in. rtx-csm stays on candle 0.9.1 directly (not the workspace pin) since it shares Tensor types with moshi 0.6.4, which itself pins candle-core 0.9.1 - both candle trees now build cleanly side by side. Also fixes two latent compile issues surfaced by actually building the cuda feature: DType is #[non_exhaustive] with new I16/I32/float8 variants (rtx-candle), and a missing HashMap import gated behind the candle feature (rtx-inference). demos/{rtx-mre,rtx-bioheat,rtx-hemodynamics} defaulted to [cpu, openblas, metal],
which broke cargo build --workspace on BOTH platforms:
- openblas: no system lib on macOS + buggy on arm64 (sgemm returns zeros, per rtx-tensor note)
- metal: objc2 deps are macOS-only, so enabling it on Linux fails to resolve
Default to cpu only; openblas/metal/accelerate remain opt-in per platform.

rtx-backend's only build-graph CUDA pull was a [dev-dependencies] entry (rtx-backend-cuda with features=[cuda]) compiled unconditionally, so cargo test --workspace failed on macOS/non-CUDA hosts trying to build cudarc. Gate it to x86_64 Linux (where the CUDA toolkit lives); cargo build was unaffected. Also drop the no-op cuda from rtx-nlg default features (empty placeholder that misleadingly implied CUDA-by-default). Audit: 121/126 workspace crates already gate CUDA correctly (optional + non-default). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]> |

Gap 1 — GpuViTEncoder + encoder-agnostic JepaTrainerV2 (jepa_gpu.rs, 12 tests):
- ExecutionTarget enum (Cpu | Cuda{device_id}); GpuViTEncoder wraps CpuViTEncoder
- cuda feature: Arc<CudaDevice> + try_allocate_gpu_buffer() via cudarc
- no-cuda: graceful Cpu fallback with correct shapes
- JepaTrainerV2 now holds Box<dyn JepaEncoder> + EmaTargetEncoderDyn
- new_with_encoder() constructor; JepaTrainerV2::new() backward-compatible
- JepaEncoder::l2_normalize gets `where Self: Sized` for dyn-compatibility
- 46 existing jepa_vit tests preserved (zero regressions)
Gap 4 — Distributed gradient sync (jepa_distributed.rs, 15 tests):
- JepaGradSync: single_process / simulated(world_size, rank) / nccl(...)
- sync_gradients(): noop at world_size=1; divides grads by world_size (simulated)
- effective_batch_size(), is_primary(), barrier() stubs
- JepaRunConfig: +world_size/rank/master_addr/master_port fields + TOML parser
- run_jepa_training() wired: creates JepaGradSync, syncs after each step,
gates logging+checkpointing on is_primary(); summary carries world_size + eff_batch
Gap 6 — JEPA eval harness (jepa_eval.rs + examples/jepa_eval.rs, 15 tests):
- JepaEvalConfig: feature_dim, num_classes, linear probe + kNN params, seed, mode
- EvalMode: LinearProbe / KNN / Both
- run_eval_suite(): LCG-generated L2-normalised features → JepaEvaluator dispatch
- load_features_txt / load_labels_txt / save_eval_csv (stdlib only)
- EvalSuiteResult::summary() and to_csv_row()
- examples/jepa_eval.rs: --mode/--dim/--classes/--train/--test/--epochs/--lr/--k
--seed/--features/--labels/--test-features/--test-labels/--output CLI flags

clippy --all-features enabled both rtx-tensor/mkl (intel-mkl-src mkl-static-lp64-seq) and rtx-csm/candle mkl (mkl-static-lp64-iomp) -> two conflicting intel-mkl-src link configs -> E0428 'MKL_CONFIG defined multiple times'. - clippy: drop --all-features (lint default features; --all-features is unsound for a multi-platform, mutually-exclusive-backend workspace). - rtx-tensor: gate intel-mkl-src to cfg(all(target_os=linux, target_arch=x86_64)) so mkl is never pulled on macOS/arm. fixed 1.31.0 bumped its MSRV to rustc 1.93 (uses unstable unchecked_shifts), breaking CI which pins nightly-2025-10-25 (rustc 1.92). Cap the transitive dep (pulled via rerun/kiddo) to the last 1.92-compatible release. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]> |

feat(rtx-nn): genericize the layer library over B::FloatElem (f64-capable)
Phase 4b of the rustytorch f32→f64 plan. Relaxed ~36 `impl<B: Backend<FloatElem = f32>>` blocks across 7 layer files to `impl<B: Backend>` over B::FloatElem: normalization (LayerNorm/RMSNorm), activation (LeakyReLU/ELU), dropout (1d/2d/3d), embedding, attention (MultiHeadAttention), transformer (MLP/Block/Encoder), conv (Conv1d/2d). Config scalars stay f32 and convert via B::FloatElem::from_f32; the layers delegate to the already-generic GenericTensor ops. f32 numerics byte-identical. The whole common rtx-nn layer library now runs on CpuBackendF64. Validated: 334 f32 lib tests (no regression) + 2 capstone + 3 new f64 layer smoke tests (layer_norm/conv2d/attention on CpuBackendF64) pass; QPUDIDP surrogate still compiles; clippy clean. Remaining f32-gated: batch_norm (GenericBatchNorm1d/2d/GroupNorm) — its manual mean/variance arithmetic needs a `where B::FloatElem: num_traits::Float` bound; focused follow-on. (Plus rtx-autograd's f32 tape, the deep-re-architecture item.) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <[email protected]> |

feat(rtx-nn): f64-capable GenericLinear + f64 MLP gradient-precision capstone
Phase 4/5 of the rustytorch f32→f64 plan. GenericLinear's 3 `impl<B: Backend<FloatElem = f32>>` blocks relaxed to `impl<B: Backend>` (from_weights takes &[B::FloatElem]; Xavier scale via B::FloatElem::from_f64), so a Linear→ReLU→Linear MLP runs end-to-end on CpuBackendF64. f32 backward-compat holds via B::FloatElem = f32. Capstone (tests/f64_mlp_precision.rs): a 4→8→1 MLP gradient checked vs central finite differences — f64 err 6.99e-12 (≤1e-9) vs f32 err 1.01e-2, i.e. f64 ~1.45e9× more accurate. This is the quantum-precision-gradient win that motivated the migration. Validated: rtx-nn 334 f32 lib tests + 2 new f64 capstone tests pass; rtx-autograd builds + tests pass; **QPUDIDP qpu-didp-surrogate compiles + 15 tests pass** (uses GenericLinear). clippy clean. Scope note: rtx-autograd's reverse-mode tape stores f32 concretely (backward()->HashMap<_,Vec<f32>>) — making it f64 is a deep tape re-architecture, not a constraint relaxation, so it's a documented follow-on (no current consumer uses it; QPUDIDP hand-rolls f64 backprop). Other rtx-nn layers (conv/transformer/attention/...) remain f32-gated — same mechanical relaxation, follow-on. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <[email protected]> |

feat(rtx-tensor): genericize GenericTensor over B::FloatElem (f64-capable)
Phase 2 of the rustytorch f32→f64 plan. All 6 `impl<B: Backend<FloatElem = f32>>` blocks on GenericTensor relaxed to `impl<B: Backend>`, with concrete f32 → B::FloatElem (full/from_slice/to_vec/add_scalar/mul_scalar/pow/clamp/leaky_relu/ elu/layer_norm/rms_norm). The genericization was fully clean — every Backend trait scalar param was already Self::FloatElem, so no methods had to stay f32-gated. GenericTensor now works with CpuBackendF64 as well as CpuBackend. Backward-compat holds via B::FloatElem = f32 for CpuBackend: to_vec() still returns Vec<f32>, from_slice still takes &[f32]. Validated: 706 rtx-tensor tests pass (704 f32 + 2 new f64); the f64 test proves 1+2^-30 survives through from_slice/matmul/to_vec (f32 rounds to 1.0). rtx-nn builds; **QPUDIDP's qpu-didp-surrogate (external, ~125 f32 sites) still compiles**. clippy clean. feat(rtx-backend-cpu): generic ops over element type + coexisting CpuBackendF64
Phase 1 of the rustytorch f32→f64 plan, backend layer. All 11 ops modules (basic/creation/unary/gemm/reduction/activation/shape/conv/pooling/normalization/ attention) are now generic over the element via a `CpuFloat` bound (`num_traits::Float + Send + Sync + 'static`); f32/Vec<f32> → E/Vec<E>, literals → E::zero()/one()/from(..). The ops were already pure scalar + rayon (no SIMD), so the f32 path is byte-identical (E inferred as f32 under CpuBackend) — no SIMD/BLAS dual-path needed. Adds `CpuBackendF64` (FloatElem = f64, TensorPrimitive = CpuTensorPrimitive<D,f64>) delegating to the same generic ops, plus the DeviceOps<CpuBackendF64> impl. CpuBackend (f32) untouched. Validated: 35 tests pass (33 original f32 + 2 new f64); `cpu_backend_f64_exceeds_ f32_precision` preserves 1+2^-30 (f32 rounds to 1.0) — proves genuine f64. rtx-tensor (dependent) still builds. clippy clean. feat(rtx-backend-cpu): make CpuTensorPrimitive generic over element type
Foundation for a coexisting f64 CPU backend (CpuBackendF64) per the rustytorch f32→f64 plan. CpuTensorPrimitive<const D> becomes CpuTensorPrimitive<const D, E = f32>: storage is Vec<E>, inherent methods (new/data/data_mut/to_vec) are element-generic. The `E = f32` default keeps every existing `CpuTensorPrimitive<D>` reference (the ops layer, the Backend GAT) f32-identical — fully backward-compatible. Send/Sync bounds are conditioned on E. 33 tests pass, clippy clean. Next: genericize the ops over the element (preserving the f32 SIMD path), add CpuBackendF64, then relax rtx-tensor's `FloatElem = f32` impl constraints. feat(flash-attention): add varlen packed-sequence support
Implements variable-length (varlen) FlashAttention that processes mixed-length batches without padding waste: - New CUDA kernel flash_attention_varlen_forward with BLOCK_Q=64 / BLOCK_K=64 tiling; grid=(ceil(max_seqlen_q/64), num_heads, 1). Each block uses a linear scan over cu_seqlens_q to identify its owning sequence and exits early when past sequence end. - New Rust module flash_varlen_forward: always-compiled CPU simulation (varlen_attention_cpu) for testing + #[cfg(cuda)] FlashVarlenKernel. - SdpaBackend::VarLen variant added to backend_selector. - 8 new CPU-only tests; total test count: 50. W4A16 AWQ on-the-fly dequantize+GEMM (rtx-compress)
- `w4a16_matmul.rs`: `AWQQuantizedWeightExt` trait + `matmul_cpu()` — group-aligned
inner loop, f64 accumulation, low-nibble-first INT4 unpacking matching mx_kernels.cu
- `cuda_kernels/w4a16_gemm.cu`: `w4a16_dequant_gemm` kernel, one thread per (batch, out_col),
8-INT4-per-iteration inner loop with `__ldg()` cache hints, BF16 scale decode, f32 accumulate
- `quantization/mod.rs`: exports `w4a16_matmul_cpu`, `AWQQuantizedWeightExt`
- Fixed 2 pre-existing pruning compile errors
- 12 tests: nibble unpack, identity weights, shape, vs-dequant (tol=1e-3), batch=1, zeros
FSDP2 forward/backward hooks (rtx-distributed)
- `fsdp2.rs`: `update_local_shard()` on `Fsdp2ShardedParam`; sync `all_gather()` +
`reduce_scatter_gradient()` using `ProcessGroup::{all_gather,reduce_scatter}`
- `pre_forward_hook()` — all-gathers every param (or copies shard in single-process)
- `post_backward_hook()` — reduce-scatters gradients, zero_grad, re-shards cache
- `step(optimizer_fn)` — applies optimizer closure to each local shard
- `make_fsdp2_module()` top-level factory; `Fsdp2MemoryStats` gains 5 new fields
incl. `memory_reduction_ratio ≈ world_size`
- 6 new tests (end-to-end training step included); total 444 pass
RMSNorm+SwiGLU fused CUDA kernel (rtx-fusion)
- `cuda/rms_norm_swiglu_fused.cu`: `rms_norm_kernel` + `rms_norm_swiglu_fused`;
shared-mem warp reduction (block_x floats), launch: grid=(batch,1,1), block=(min(hidden,1024),1,1)
- `cuda_kernels/rms_norm_fused.rs`: CPU reference `rms_norm_cpu`/`swiglu_cpu`/
`rms_norm_swiglu_cpu`; `#[cfg(feature="cuda")] RmsNormFusedKernel` NVRTC wrapper
- `codegen/cubecl.rs`: replaced RmsNorm comment stub with cfg-gated NVRTC dispatch
- `backend.rs` + `tensor.rs`: added 15 missing `Backend` trait impls (sin/cos/relu/conv2d/…)
that blocked test compilation
- `Cargo.toml`: added rtx-fusion to workspace members
- 8 new tests (PyTorch-formula verified: x=[1,2,3,4] → [0.365, 0.730, 1.095, 1.461]);
total 103 pass
Test results: 12 + 444 + 103 = 559 tests, 0 failures

feat(galore2): implement GaLore-2 optimizer with 12 pure-CPU tests
Adds GaLoreAdamW to crates/training/rtx-transformers — a memory-efficient
AdamW variant that reduces optimizer state by projecting gradients to a
low-rank subspace and periodically refreshing it via randomised SVD.
Key facts verified by tests:
- Memory formula: for [rows×cols] param with rank r,
GaLore stores: rows*r + 2*r*cols f32 elements
AdamW stores: 2*rows*cols f32 elements
For [256×256] r=64: ratio=0.375 (62.5% reduction)
For [4096×4096] r=128: ratio<10% (>90% reduction)
- Subspace refresh triggers when (step - last_refresh) >= update_proj_gap
- Momentum inheritance: m_new = new_Q^T @ old_Q @ m_old preserves direction
- Small params (< min_param_size=4096 elements) fall back to standard AdamW
Files changed:
- crates/training/rtx-transformers/src/optimizers/galore.rs (new)
- crates/training/rtx-transformers/src/optimizers/mod.rs (mod + re-exports)

Item 1 — CUDA Graphs wiring (rtx-transformers)
- Added `enable_cuda_graphs: bool` (default false) + `cuda_graph_warmup_iters: usize`
(default 3) to `TrainingConfig`
- Wired 3-phase state machine into `training_loop.rs` (warmup → capture → replay)
gated on `#[cfg(feature = "cuda")]`; stream plumbing stubbed with TODO pending
`CudaStreamHandle` threading
Item 2 — FP8 E4M3/E5M2 training infrastructure (rtx-tensor, rtx-transformers)
- `fp8_cast.cu`: dual-path CUDA kernels — SM_89+ uses `<cuda_fp8.h>` native
`__nv_cvt_*` intrinsics; older SM uses software bit-manipulation fallback
- `fp8_cast.rs`: host-side CPU casting + `#[cfg(feature = "cuda")]` GPU stubs
- `fp8_gemm.rs`: bit-accurate E4M3 decoder/encoder, BF16 round-trip utils, CPU
reference matmul with cuBLASLt GPU path documented inline; 12 unit tests
- `training_config.rs`: `fp8_training: bool`, `fp8_e4m3_forward: bool`
- `linear.rs` (modular): `fp8_mode: bool` field + forward dispatch stub
- build.rs: registers `fp8_cast.cu` alongside existing `element_wise.cu`
- 22 FP8 unit tests — all pass
Item 3 — FlashAttention-3 Blackwell (WGMMA + TMA + warp specialization)
- `flash_attention_v3_forward.cu`: SM_90+ warp-specialised producer/consumer
kernel (producer TMA-loads K/V tiles, consumers run WMMA as portable WGMMA
proxy); SM_89+ FP8 header path; SM<90 standard FA2-style WMMA fallback
- `flash_v3_forward.rs`: NVRTC wrapper (`compile_ptx` via `include_str!`),
`FlashV3ForwardKernel::new/is_supported/forward`; 6 unit tests
- `backend_selector.rs`: `SdpaBackend::FlashAttentionV3`, `for_compute_capability`,
`supports_flash_v3` (major >= 9), FA3 scoring (0.98/0.90/0.70), 2× speedup estimate
- `kernels/simple.rs`: `v3_kernel: Option<FlashV3ForwardKernel>` in `FlashCudaKernels`
- Fixed pre-existing `Device::Cpu` cfg-gate bug in `tensor/creation.rs`
- 8 new FA3 backend tests + 6 kernel unit tests; 50 total pass
Item 4 — SnapKV attention-score eviction + prefix caching (rtx-inference, rtx-serving-api)
- `prefix_index.rs`: `PrefixIndex` with 8MB Zobrist hash table (Knuth MMIX LCG seed),
`compute_hash/lookup/insert/remove/remove_page`; 10 unit tests
- `eviction.rs`: `AttentionScoreEviction` struct — `accumulate_scores` +
`select_evict_positions` (retain top keep_ratio + last recent_window); 7 unit tests
- `types.rs`: `EvictionPolicy::AttentionScore { keep_ratio, recent_window }` +
`KvCacheConfig::enable_prefix_caching`
- `paged_kv_cache.rs`: `prefix_index: Option<PrefixIndex>` + `lookup_prefix /
register_prefix / unregister_prefix_page / prefix_caching_enabled` methods
- `config.rs` (serving-api): `enable_prefix_sharing: true` (was false),
`snapkv_keep_ratio: 0.6`, `snapkv_recent_window: 32`
- Fixed 12 pre-existing test errors (spurious `.await` on sync constructors)
- 17 SnapKV/prefix tests pass
Total: 918 lib tests pass across rtx-tensor, rtx-flash-attention, rtx-transformers,
rtx-inference. Zero new failures.

fix(gaps): G7/CI — ONNX constant codegen, DLPack exhaustiveness, 3 new CI jobs
G7 (Low):
- rtx-onnx-codegen: replace todo!("Constant tensor") with real inline constant handling;
supports Floats+Ints shape attributes, Float scalar, and compile_error! for unknown cases
- rtx-bindings/dlpack: fix non-exhaustive match arms for Device::Cpu (no #[cfg] gate needed)
and new DType variants (FP8E4M3/E5M2, MX formats → OpaqueHandle); both features compile clean
CI (Sprint 10): Add 3 missing jobs to .gitea/workflows/ci.yml
- python-bindings: maturin develop --features python on ubuntu + macos
- wasm-build: cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown + <5MB size check
- distributed-tests: cargo test -p rtx-distributed
- ci-success gate now requires all 8 jobs to pass

fix(gaps): G4 — re-enable all rtx-transformers Phase 2/3 modules (222 compile errors fixed)
Uncommented all deferred modules in lib.rs and fixed API drift across ~60 files in 9 module groups: continual, curriculum, meta, modular, neural_ode, graph, kan, perceiver, distributed/pipeline_parallelism. Common patterns fixed across modules: - Tensor::randn/zeros/ones([a,b]) → (&[a,b], device)? (slice + Result) - Result<T, TensorError> → .map_err(Into::into)? in TransformerError contexts - Device by value → &device references - &Tensor where Tensor expected → .clone() - tensor.relu()/tanh()/sigmoid() as methods not ops functions - Tensor arithmetic returning Result: (a + b)? → (a.clone() + b)? - shape literals → shape.dims() for Shape type - sum(n) → sum(Some(n)), mean(None) → mean(&[], false) - i64 indices → usize where required - backward(x) → backward(x, None) - Borrow conflicts on self.field resolved by extracting to locals before mut borrow - BatchingStats private fields → pub(crate) - TransformerError::Serialization → ::SerializationError - Add scalar to tensor: (t + 0.1)? → t.add_scalar(0.1)? fix(rtx-flash-attention): sm_120 for Blackwell, robust nvcc path resolution
build.rs was hardcoded for sm_90 (incorrectly labelled Ada Lovelace/RTX 5090). Fix for RTX 5060 Ti (sm_120, Blackwell): - Auto-detect SM via CUDA_ARCH env var (default sm_120); compute_ prefix derived automatically so compute_120/sm_120 are no longer hardcoded. - nvcc resolution: try PATH first, then CUDA_PATH/bin/nvcc, CUDA_HOME, and common installation prefixes — no longer panics when nvcc is at /usr/local/cuda-13.1/bin but not in $PATH. - PTX version: sm_100+ → .version 8.0 (PTX ISA 8.0 for Blackwell). - No-GPU branch: remove the warning — CPU fallback is valid, there is no reason to warn every build when cuda/metal are intentionally off. D350: GPU backbone training benchmark (RTX 5060 Ti)
Adds d350_gpu_backbone_training — 200-step Adam loop on a 4-regime corpus that prefers Device::cuda(0) and falls back gracefully to CPU. Measured numbers: - CPU (DIM=16): 886 steps/s, MSE 0.2163 → 0.0024 - GPU (DIM=16): 803 steps/s, MSE 0.2163 → 0.0024 GPU is marginally slower at DIM=16 because the SSM scan and conv1d remain on CPU in both paths; cuBLAS only helps the four linear projections, which are tiny at dim=16. The GPU advantage emerges at larger dims (≥256) where the projections dominate. Correctness is identical on both devices. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <[email protected]> |

D309: fix MambaRecurrence step — conv1d history buffer + new ergonomic API
The single-step recurrence was missing a causal conv1d history buffer, so stepwise outputs diverged from the full-sequence forward (max_abs_diff ≈ 6e-2). Add `conv_buf: Vec<f32>` to `MambaState` (oldest-first per channel), thread it through `MambaRecurrence::step` so the kernel sees the correct `kc-1` prior x_in values, and shift the buffer after each step. Ergonomic additions: - `MambaRecurrence::init_state()` — zero-initialised state with correct dims - `MambaRecurrence::state_size()` / `d_model()` — accessor methods - `MambaState::hidden()` — slice accessor for the SSM h vector - `MambaState: PartialEq` — enables determinism assertions in tests Both D309 tests now pass: `step_matches_full_forward` and `fresh_state_is_zero_and_deterministic`. Adds an opt-in learned-query attention pool to SetEncoderTeacher (SetEncoderConfig::with_learned_pool): pool = softmax(q_mem·hᵀ)·h instead of the fixed mean/decay pool — Isola's transformer-teacher [MEM] query. New q_mem param (threaded through graph/train_step/run/named_params; only updated in learned-pool mode). Default off → existing teachers byte-unchanged. Finding (test teacher_content_addresses_selective_retrieval): on a selective- retrieval task (signal in one marked token among distractors) BOTH the mean-pool and learned-query teachers recover the marked token to low MSE (~0.0006 / ~0.002) — because the self-attention layer already routes the marked token's signal to every position before the pool. So the mean-pool was NOT the recall bottleneck (correcting the D318 hypothesis): the teacher can content-address; the real recall bottleneck is the recurrent *cell* that imitates it. The learned-query pool is shipped as an equally-capable, faithful-to-the-talk alternative. All 5 teacher unit tests pass; clippy(-D)/fmt clean. ClonedMemoryUpdater::train_rollout rolls the cell forward over K inputs on its OWN memory (not teacher-forced) and backprops the accumulated predict-the-future loss through the whole K-step graph — the tape's first multi-step training path, directly optimizing the free-rollout behavior the cell is evaluated on (vs the one-step BC/DAgger paths). To stay within the finite-diff-gated op set (matmul/gelu/add/mul/sub/sum — no tensor concat), W_in is split into its memory rows (applied to M) and input rows (applied to x); the two gradient halves are re-stacked for the Adam update. Non-finite guard + gradient clip as in the other training paths. Test: rollout training reduces the K-step loss (>2x). clippy(-D)/fmt clean. SetEncoderConfig gains `recency_decay` (default 0.85) + `with_recency_decay`, threaded into pool_weights. A smaller decay concentrates the recency pool on the most recent tokens — a *sharper* oracle that reacts fast to regime switches (less denoising). Existing teachers default to 0.85 (unchanged). Lets omni-think tune the teacher's reaction speed for non-stationary streams. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <[email protected]> |

F.1 — finite-difference gradchecks for tanh, sigmoid, and the exact gated composite (1-z)*m + z*c (z=sigmoid, c=tanh) added to tape_cpu_gradcheck.rs. All pass (rel-err < 2e-2) — the activation VJPs that already existed are now proven correct on the real CpuBackend (E0 discipline), so the gated cell can rely on them. F.2 — GatedMemoryUpdater: a GRU-style gated recurrent memory cell. z = sigmoid([M‖x]·W_z); c = tanh([M‖x]·W_c); M_t = (1-z)⊙M + z⊙c The convex update is a non-expansion (|M_t| ≤ max(|M_0|, 1)), so free rollout stays bounded with NO clamp — and the learned gate can both jump at a regime switch (z≈1) and hold+denoise in steady state (z≈0), which the residual+leaky ClonedMemoryUpdater cannot. Same method surface (new/step/predict/train_step/ train_step_memory) so the omni-think facade is cell-generic. Tests: gated cell trains (loss drops); 500-step free rollout stays in [-1,1] without a clamp. clippy(-D)/fmt clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <[email protected]> |

SetEncoderConfig gains an opt-in `recency` flag (default false = unchanged mean-pool stationary behavior). When set, the encoder adds sinusoidal timestamp embeddings to the token embeddings (so attention can reason about position) and pools with an exponential-decay (recent-weighted) reduction instead of a uniform mean — a recent-window sufficient statistic that tracks non-stationary signals. Both use only existing-VJP tape ops (add + matmul/softmax); no new params. Test: recency-mode teacher trains end-to-end (loss >5x drop). Existing stationary tests unchanged. clippy(-D)/fmt clean. Two robustness additions for on-policy distillation, which trains on the policy's own (clamped, sometimes extreme) visited states: - train_step now skips non-finite-loss steps and clips gradients, so an extreme rollout state can't poison every weight via Adam. - train_step_memory: a memory-only correction at a caller-chosen lr — trains just the recurrence (W_in, W_mem) to map (prev,x)->target_mem, leaving the BC-trained readout (W_read) intact. This is the key to DAgger working: it pulls the free-running memory back toward the oracle trajectory without the readout retraining that otherwise blows the predictions up. Make the cloned updater's recurrence M_t = ρ·M_{t-1} + Δ a contraction (ρ=0.9)
and clamp the free-running state (|M| ≤ 4). One-step BC has no signal against
autoregressive drift (that is E4/DAgger's job); these keep a free rollout
numerically bounded — no 1e25 blow-up — so E4 has a stable base to refine.
Training is teacher-forced on the bounded oracle memory, so neither ever binds
during training.

SMT E3b: ClonedMemoryUpdater — recurrent updater cloned from the oracle (no BPTT)
A trainable recurrent cell g(M_{t-1}, x_t) -> M_t (gelu MLP, residual memory
update) plus a predict-the-future readout, trained on Autodiff<CpuBackend> with
the same host-Adam pattern as SetEncoderTeacher.
train_step is one-step behavioral cloning, TEACHER-FORCED on the oracle memory:
each example feeds the oracle's previous memory and regresses (new_mem ->
target_mem) + (readout -> next latent) in a single tape graph. No rollout, no
backprop-through-time. Off-tape step/predict use a gelu byte-identical to the
CPU tape's (tanh approx, sqrt(2/pi), 0.044715) so rollout matches training.
The residual update M_t = M_{t-1} + delta lets the recurrence rule stay
length-invariant — the basis for extrapolating past the teacher's horizon (E3b
generalization test, omni-cortex side).
Tests: updater learns a one-step transition (>10x loss drop); off-tape
step/predict shapes + finiteness. clippy(-D)/fmt clean.

SMT E3a: expose Mamba's recurrent state as a single-step updater (equivalence-pinned)
MambaRecurrence reconstructs MambaBlock's selective-scan as an explicit step(state, x_t) -> (state', y_t) recurrence over host f32 weights, with the recurrent state (h, conv-ring) carried between steps. This is the substrate the SMT memory updater is behaviorally cloned on (E3b) — no BPTT, one step at a time. Dimensions are derived from the persisted tensor shapes, so mamba.rs is left untouched (it is near the 1250-LOC cap). silu/softplus are byte-identical copies of the forward's. Equivalence pin (the plan's highest-risk item): stepping a window one token at a time from a zero state reproduces the full-sequence forward EXACTLY — max_abs_diff = 0.0 (bit-identical), on an active_block with wide Delta so the scan genuinely drives the output. Plus a fresh-state determinism test. clippy(-D warnings) + fmt clean on the new module and test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <[email protected]> |

SMT E1: SetEncoderTeacher — the predictive-state oracle (time-parallel, tape-trained)
Promotes the proven attention set-encoder smoke test (PR #4, tape_train_smoke.rs) into a reusable rtx-transformers layer for Supervised Memory Training. The teacher maps a window of past tokens to a fixed-size memory M via embed → self-attention → residual → mean-pool → memory projection, with a decoder head supervised by predict-the-future MSE so that M becomes a sufficient statistic of the past. - Trains end-to-end on Autodiff<CpuBackend> (the gradient-correct real backend from PR #3), with a self-contained deterministic host-side Adam. - Time-parallel by construction (one window → one memory, no recurrence to unroll) — this is the oracle whose trajectory the recurrent Mamba updater is later behaviorally cloned against, so the recurrent net never needs BPTT. - Exposes named_params/set_named_params so the caller (omni-think's PredictiveStateTeacher facade) owns safetensors persistence + BLAKE3 sealing. - Adds rtx-backend + rtx-backend-cpu deps (the tape needs a concrete backend). Tests: teacher trains (loss >5x drop), encode is deterministic + fixed-size, params round-trip. fmt + clippy(-D warnings) clean on the new module.
